our hearts shatter like mirrors

we would laugh and stare at the lights high above us, like little stars, shinning just for us. we set our hopes too high. giddy with love and ignorant with youth. we didn't know any better back then. we threw ourselves whole heartedly into it, later to find out our hearts shatter like mirrors. the reflection cast a cold illumination off of it's pointed corners. we picked up the pieces, one by one. then deliberately fit the fragments together again. but they never quite line up as they did before. the middle left of mine is missing a sliver. the bottom tip of yours has a chip gone. we meet eyes for an instant. so many thoughts are exchanged in that moment. the questions still keep me up at night. i remember how good things used to be. in the second where our eye interlocked, so many moons ago, through confusion, and hurt, and despair, one thing was understood.

we still need each other.
